Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) has commissioned its new ANDRITZ TM5 tissue production line at its Unit II integrated mill in Mondipatti, marking the company's strategic entry into the consumer tissue market under its newly launched brand, LUMEA.
ANDRITZ PrimeLine™ S 2000 machine is designed to operate at a speed of 2,000 meters per minute with a working width of 2.85 meters. The installation provides the mill with an additional production capacity of 34,000 tonnes per year, specifically configured to manufacture premium tissue grades such as facial tissues, napkins, toilet paper, and kitchen towels using TNPL’s own hardwood kraft pulp.
Technical specifications of the TM5 include the PrimePress XT Evo shoe press, which utilizes third-generation technology to enhance the bulk and softness of the paper while maintaining high dryness levels. The drying section is equipped with a 20-foot steel Yankee dryer and a steam-heated hood. This configuration allows the facility to utilize steam generated from the mill’s biomass-fueled boilers, which offers a more sustainable energy profile compared to conventional gas-heated systems.
The scope of the installation provided by ANDRITZ extended from stock preparation to the final reel. This included a complete fiber preparation line and a high-efficiency pump package, which was manufactured and tested at the ANDRITZ facility in Chennai. To manage operational efficiency, the entire line is integrated with the Metris digitalization platform, providing the mill with intelligent control systems and real-time data analytics.
The LUMEA range is manufactured to be Elemental Chlorine Free and Optical Brightening Agent free, ensuring the products are safe for both skin and food contact. The comprehensive product portfolio includes premium facial tissues in box and soft-pack formats, versatile paper napkins for household and hospitality use, multi-ply toilet tissues designed for superior softness, and high-absorbency kitchen towels with enhanced wet strength. These products are manufactured within a GSM spectrum of 12 to 38.
This startup is a key step of TNPL’s diversification strategy, aimed at addressing the increasing demand for hygiene products in the domestic market. By integrating the new tissue line with existing pulp production at Unit II, the company has established a streamlined "pulp-to-product" manufacturing process designed to optimize fiber use and reduce the environmental footprint of its operations.
